Earthstone Clays are slip-house bodies. The slip is prepared in large batches and finely sieved. It is then pumped into filter presses for water removal prior to pugging. This slip-housing process gives the clay body much greater uniformity and virtually guarantees freedom from contamination.

ORIGINAL WHITE
(Firing Temp 1180-1280ºC)
ES5
Scarva Earthstone Original White matures between 1180°C-1280°C, firing white. It is highly resistant to warping and cracking. The addition of a small proportion of carefully blended and graded molochite means that
ES5 Original White throws large pieces easily and responds well to press moulding and slab building. Scarva Earthstone Original White is highly regarded by professional potters.

EXTRA SMOOTH
(Firing Temp 1150-1280ºC)
ES10
A highly versatile fine white body with a broad range of applications, Scarva Earthstone Extra Smooth White matures between 1150 °C-1280°C. This unusually wide range means that it can be high
biscuit fired to 1150°C for low temperature earthenware glazes, or biscuit fired at 1000°C for mid-temperature earthenware or stoneware glazes. It throws and casts extremely well and takes sprigged or stamped decoration.

Smooth
Textured White

(Firing Temp 1180-1290ºC)
ES20
Scarva Earthstone Smooth Textured White is a particularly versatile clay which matures between 1180-1290°C. It fires white. ES20's low shrink-age means that it is highly resistant to warping, cracking and thermal shock. Earthstone Smooth
textured body is particularly suited to throwing large pieces and the addition of specially selected molochite means that it is also excellent for hand building, slab building and coiling.

Hand
Building White

(Firing Temp 1200-1300ºC)
ES40
ES40's appearance and firing range are similar to Scarva Earthstone Original White. ES40 is a high quality white clay body. The addition of coarse molochite makes Earthstone Hand Building an incredibly strong clay. It is heavily enough
grogged to make the most extreme sculptural forms and is highly resistant to warping and cracking. This makes it suitable for hand made tiles and ceramic murals.

Standard Crank
(Firing Temp 1160-1300ºC)
ES50
Hand builders and sculptors will be delighted with this superb new crank body. It is an open textured, coarsely grogged clay, which still retains tremendous plasticity. It has all the
qualities you expect from crank e.g. warp resistance, low shrinkage and excellent green and fired strength. It gives toasted buff in oxidation and a rich, warm speckled orange buff under reduction. Suitable for raku firing.

Smooth
Textured Crank

(Firing Temp 1160-1300ºC)
ES60
A fine grogged altenative to our original Crank, offering a finer surface and closer texture. This clay should appeal greatly to hand builders and sculptors who require a warm, plastic clay with excellent green strength, but need a smoother
finish than standard cranks can offer. It is suitable for reduction firing, raku etc. Toasted buff in oxidation and warm speckled orange buff under reduction.

Terracotta Crank
(Firing Temp 1080-1220ºC)
ES65
Earthstone Terracotta Crank allows you to create large sculptural pieces and is a beautifully textured, richly coloured clay. ES65 Terracotta Crank combines the warmth and excellent working properties of red
clay with the strength of a crank, giving an exceptional body that is ideal for all types of hand building processes.

Speckled
Stoneware

(Firing Temp 1160-1290ºC)
ES109
A new body using our dry-batching method of production. ES109 is superbly plastic and has an attractive speckle. Made from a mixture of ball clays with medium-textured silica sand added for tooth, it will
give a reduction effect when fired in an oxidising atmosphere. This body has been developed for the professional production potter and with good thermal shock properties is excellent for domestic ware.

GLACIER
PORCELAIN

(Firing Temp 1280-1300ºC)
ES170
Whiteness, glass-like translucency and strength are qualities which attract many potters to porcelain. However, due to the very nature of the raw mater-ials used in their produc-tion, most porcelain bodies have very little natural plasticity. In order
to overcome this, many manufacturers add ball clay, thus sacrificing the translucency and whiteness. We have discovered that by using high quality, low iron-bearing, china clays, silicas, bentonites and mineral fluxes, it is possible to produce a porcelain which is not only very white, but also translucent and very plastic. Scarva Earthstone Glacier Porcelain - probably the best porcelain body available.

Super White
Raku Body

(Firing Temp 900-1300ºC)
PF520
The very best white raku body on the market. With over 58% molochite, this body can withstand the most extreme thermal shock. This is due to both the high alumina plastic ball clay and the three
different grades of molochite. This body has very low shrinkage, a medium texture and is highly resistant to warping and cracking.

WSG
White Stoneware
Grogged
(Firing Temp 1200-1300ºC)
PF570
The same body as Professional WS but with 10% 80's Molochite added WSG is for potters who require a clay with more tooth and ease of drying to aid in the production of larger pieces. The molochite also allows this body
to be used for small hand built and coiled pots.

Architectural
Handbuilding Clay Body
(Firing Temp 1180-1300ºC)
PF610
A cheaper alternative to T material this excellent hand building body contains a high percen-tage of fine to medium molochite. This gives it superb sculptural quali-ties with very low shrink-age, approximately 6%
at 1280ºC. Professional Architectural Hand Building Body is for potters who need a clay that does not warp under extreme conditions. It can be used with confidence to create even the largest pieces.

Black Chunky
Sculpture Clay
(Firing Temp 1200-1280ºC)
PF660
Black Chunky Sculpture Clay has a beautiful texture and is excellent for big sculptures and murals. It is a strong body with very low shrinkage, good for building rugged sculp-tural forms. It's ro-bust
nature also makes it ideal for architectural ceramics. Black Chunky Sculpture Clay is the clay for everything from large slabs to sculptural work.

Black Textured
(Firing Temp 1080-1260ºC)
PF670
Black Textured is good for sculptures, hand building or large thrown pieces. This clay has been spec-ially formulated to fire between 1080 - 1260ºC with very low shrinkage. Its attractive colour and texture give PF670 a very
distinctive character.
(Results may vary)

Black Smooth
(Firing Temp 1080-1260ºC)
PF680
Black Smooth contains a fine grog which gives a close texture to the body and a fine surface to finished pieces. This smooth finish should appeal to hand builders or sculptors who produce
tile and relief panels or ceramic murals. PF680 has been formulated to fire between 1080 - 1260ºC.

P2 CASTING
PORCELAIN

(Firing Temp 1220-1250ºC)
SP470
An economy body giving a high degree of translucency at a slightly lower temperature. Suitable for casting and throwing.

CHARACTERISTICS of Flaxpaper clay

These bodies have all the inherent benefits of paper clays, they are strong, flexible, lightweight and have low shrinkage. However, unlike other Paperclays, Scarva FLAXpaperCLAYs have, as an additional benefit, virtually no mould growth.

The addition of flax fibre to clay results in the distribution of extremely fine fibres throughout the body and this serves two basic functions:
1    It creates a strong but flexible internal
      structure in the clay.
2    It creates a "capillary system" which
      transfers moisture easily and evenly
      throughout the clay.

Scarva FLAXpaperCLAY alows the potter to be more of an artist and less of a technician:
Incredibly strong slabs - even extra thin slabs will fold, bend and drape without

tearing.

Extra large or thick forms hold up under their own weight.

Greenware re-wets easily and evenly allowing you to re-work, alter or add new clay

at any stage of dryness. It is possible with this clay body to build an armature
    and
allow it to dry as a support sculpture that need not be removed for firing.

Moisture evaporates so evenly from this clay body that it can be force dried with

excellent results.

Exaggerated forms hold their shape. Be careful not to get too extreme: once

bisqued, the fibre structure burns out and slumping may occur if the base-clay is

over fired.

Greenware - even bone dry - is unbelievably strong and easy to handle or

transport if necessary.

Make Scarva FLAXpaperCLAY into a putty to repair cracks in greenware or to

construct forms out of previously made modules. You may even repair or add to

already bisqued Scarva FLAXpaperCLAY. For best results you should
    re-bisqueware
after making alterations.

In addition, the burn out of the flax fibres results in a noticeably lower fired

weight, especially in large-scale works and the resulting openness gives improved

thermal shock properties to most clay bodies. Firings can be Oxidised, Reduced,
    Raku or Salt and Soda.

Tips for using Flaxpaper Clays

You may have already tried modifying your existing clay bodies by adding fibres or paper pulp. This is our version utilising finely chopped flax fibres and cellulose in a very forgiving clay body, FLAXpaperCLAYs are ready to use straight from the bag. Time now for you to make new and interesting discoveries using this material!
 Experimenting
SCARVA T.S FLAXpaper CLAY is extremely versatile and can be rolled into slabs, coiled, sculptured or carved. You will notice that it has a different slightly stickier feel, due to the combination of fine ball clays, cellulose and fibres which give good unfired strength. We recommend that you do some preliminary tests, rolling into thin sheets, making coils, pinching, tearing, impressing and carving etc. so that you build up a wide selection of test tiles that can be bisque fired and glazed to earthenware and stoneware temperatures, for
future reference. Try allowing a variety of thick and thin slabs to dry on an unvarnished wooden board or tabletop. They can then be cut with a sharp knife and joined instantly by using a slip. Make the slip from dry off-cuts which have been dissolved into a slurry in warm water and then mixed thoroughly.
Recycling
When recycling SCARVA T.S. FLAXpaperCLAY, or a combination of it and your own clay, it is a good idea to cover your plaster drying batts or plaster moulds with a piece of old cloth sheeting, as FLAXpaperCLAY is stickier than ordinary clays and may adhere to the plaster alone.
Firing
When firing thick or large flat tiles made from SCARVA T.S. FLAXpaperCLAY, make sure that they are dried properly before loading them into your kiln. Fire at no more than 30 degrees per hour, up to 400oC, when the fibres and paper will be burnt off, this is one way to avoid the edges curling up.
Joining to existing work
SCARVA T.S. FLAXpaperCLAY rolled into slabs will not tear easily if it is stretched over hump moulds or other forms made from plaster, wood or cardboard. Once allowed to stiffen, these modules can be joined together using a slurry as described above.

Because SCARVA T.S. FLAXpape CLAY body re-wets easily, it is possible to add soft plastic clay over an armature or former made from the same clay, perhaps built from slabs. Spray the dry raw clay under structure with water using a plant sprayer, before scoring the surface a little, using a serrated metal scraper or old fork, paint with a thin slurry, then add the new skin of soft plastic clay.

SCARVA T.S FLAXpaperCLAY can also be joined to bisque fired clay. First spray the bisque ware lightly with water, then coat the area to be covered with a thin slurry, before adding the soft new clay. These pieces will need to be re-fired to bisque temperature before glazing. Try with one or two old pots to practice these techniques.
Reinforcing with wire
Many makers have searched for a strong, flexible and lightweight clay body for building wall panels or relief. It is now possible to build large, ambitious and complex panels incorporating high temperature wires into the actual structure either to reinforce it or to hang the panels. Please avoid using galvanised wires as they produce dangerous fumes when being fired. Fecralloy and Kanthal wires are available from us, please ask for details.
