AMACO VELVET UNDERGLAZES

1). VELVETS ARE VIBRANT, SEMI TRANSLUCENT, FLUXED COLOURS OF REMARKABLE VERSATILITY AND OFFER THREE ALTERNATIVE TECHNIQUES. WHEN LEFT UNGLAZED AND THEN FIRED 1000C-1100C, THEY GIVE SEMI MATT SURFACES. WITH SLIGHTLY HIGHER FIRING THEY ASSUME A SLIGHT SHEEN. GLAZING IS NOT ESSENTIAL AND THUS PERMANENT DECORATION OF FINELY DETAILED MODELLING CAN BE DONE WITHOUT HAVING THE DETAIL ROUNDED AWAY BY SUBSEQUENT GLAZING.

2) WHEN USED IN NORMAL UNDERGLAZE FASHION THEY CAN BE GLAZED BY DIPPING OR SPRAYING USING 2205 OR OTHER SUITABLE  GLAZES, OR TRANSPARENT BRUSH ON GLAZE CAN BE USED. THE COLOURS THEN INTENSIFY AND GIVE GLOSSY RESULTS.

3). THEY CAN BE USED IN MAJOLICA FASHION ON THE UNFIRED GLAZE, THE FLUX CONTENT OF THE COLOURS GIVING MORE PREDICTABLE RESULTS. VELVETS OFFER THE ADVANTAGE OF TAKING THE GUESS WORK OUT OF COLOUR PLANNING. THEY FIRE TRUE TO COLOUR AS APPLIED FROM THE JAR AND CAN BE INTERMIXED TO CREATE A PALLETE OF HUNDREDS OF SHADES. THEY TOLERATE A WIDE FIRING RANGE AND CAN BE USED ON PORCELAIN AND STONEWARE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ORANGE OR RED. VELVETS VITRIFY ABOUT CONE 4-6. THEY CAN BE USED ON CLAY, BISCUIT OR ON THE GLAZE AND CAN BE APPLIED BY BRUSHING, SPONGING OR SPRAYING.

 UNDERGLAZE APPLICATION METHODS

BRUSHINGKEEP THE BRUSH FULLY LOADED AT ALL TIMES. FOR SOLID COVERAGE, AS IN BACKGROUNDS APPLY 3 OR 4 COATS OF COLOUR, WORKING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS WITH EACH LAYER OF COLOUR. WAIT FOR WATER SHEEN TO DISAPPEAR BETWEEN COATS.

SPONGING POUR COLOUR ONTO A GLAZED TILE. SATURATE SLIGHTLY DAMPENED FINE SPONGE WITH COLOUR AND LIGHTLY PAT ONTO THE GREENWARE OR BISQUE: PERMITTING THE FIRST COAT TO FULLY DRY BEFORE APPLYING ANOTHER. SOLID COLOUR BACKGROUNDS CAN BE QUICKLY ACHIEVED WITH THIS METHOD WHICH ELIMINATES THE STREAKING THAT OFTEN APPEARS WHEN USING A BRUSHING METHOD.

AIRBRUSHING DILUTE COLOUR WITH WATER TO THE CONSISTENCY FOR A SMOOTH SPRAYING APPLICATION. FOR SOLID COVER COVERAGE AIRBRUSH 3-4 COATS: FOR SHADING, 1 COAT IS USUALLY SUFFICIENT.

ANTIQUING – DILUTE 2 PARTS COLOUR WITH 1 PART WATER, FOR AN ANTIQUING SOLUTION. APPLY TO BISQUE WITH AS LARGE A BRUSH AS PRACTICAL, ALLOW TO DRY. REMOVE THE COLOURS FROM THE RAISED AREAS WITH A MOIST SPONGE, RINSING AND TURNING THE SPONGE OFTEN TO PRODUCE CLEAR HIGHLIGHTS – EXPOSING THE EMBOSSED DESIGN.

 TERRA - COLOUR - APPLICATION

WHEN  BRUSHING A GLAZE, USE AS LARGE A BRUSH AS PRACTIBLE WITH A SMALLER BRUSH FOR HARD TO REACH PLACES. USE A FULL BRUSH OF GLAZE AT ALL TIMES… DIP THE BRUSH IN THE GLAZE AND SHAKE IT GENTLY, JUST SUFFICIENTLY TO PREVENT DRIPPING.

DO NOT SCRAPE THE BRUSH ON THE TOP OF THE BOTTLE OR THERE WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT GLAZE ON THE BRUSH TO FLOW FREELY. HOLD THE BRUSH LIGHTLY AND FLOW THE GLAZE OF THE BRUSH IN A CONTINOUS LINE AND NEVER PAT GLAZE ON RANDOMLY (EXCEPT FOR SPECIAL EFFECTS). SMOOTH THE GLAZE BY BRUSHING BACK AND FORTH VERY LIGHTLY.

BEGIN THE NEXT STROKE WHERE THE PREVIOUS STROKE ENDED AND THEN LIGHTLY BRUSH BACK OVER THE AREA WHERE THE TWO STROKES JOINED, WHICH WILL ADEQUATELY SMOOTH OUT THE JOINT BETWEEN THE TWO STROKES. APPLY SUBSEQUENT COATS IN THE SAME MANNER BUT IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION (FOR EXAMPLE, FIRST COAT HORIZONTALLY, SECOND VERTICALLY AND THE THIRD DIAGONALLY). WAIT FOR THE PREVIOUS COAT TO DRY THOROUGHLY BEFORE APPLYING ANOTHER COAT.

AN ALMOST ENDLESS NUMBER OF SPECIAL EFFECTS CAN BE ACHIEVED BY MODIFYING THE ABOVE TECHNIQUES BUT SHOULD BE TESTED FIRST. THINGS TO TRY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING, INDIVIDUALLY OR IN COMBINATION.

SPONGING – BY DAPPLING THE SAME GLAZE OR ANOTHER GLAZE ON TOP.

OVERLAPPING – A SECOND ADJOINING GLAZE ON THE FIRST COLOUR.

BEING LEAD FREE THESE GLAZES ARE SUITABLE FOR SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES AS WELL AS GENERAL POTTERY USE

PREPARING AND LOOKING AFTER POWDER GLAZES

Glazes that are delivered to you in a powder form and need to be mixed with water in order to use them.

To do this you need a 120 mesh sieve, a large lawn brush and two large, clean containers. Clean the sieve and lawn brush thoroughly to get rid of any residual glaze which could affect your new glaze.

 1.       Mix the glaze with water until it is of the consistency of single cream. You should use a mask while doing this to avoid inhaling the glaze powder.

 2.       Set the sieve over a bucket, making sure it is stable. Pour the glaze mixture into the sieve until it reaches about a third of the way up the side of it. Use the lawn brush to push the glaze slowly through the sieve, using a circular movement. Top up the sieve with more glaze until it has all been sieved.

 3.       Repeat this exercise, sieving the glaze again into another clean bucket. Use a rubber kidney to scrape all the glaze out of the bucket and into the sieve. The glaze is now known as slop and should be ready to use. Test the glaze on a small piece of biscuited clay - the best design is a square tile with a hole cut in the corner and a textured section on it. Mark the back of the test clearly with iron oxide solution or a potters pen or under glaze pencil. Attach the test piece to the bucket by threading a piece of string through the hole in the test piece and attaching it to the handle. This will give you an easy reference in future. If you use more than one clay, make tests on all clay types as different bodies can affect the colour of the glaze.

 4.       Your glaze should be carefully stored in a bucket with a tightly fitting lid. This will prevent contamination and stop water evaporating off the surface. However, the constituents of glaze will not stay in suspension for ever, and you may find that if you have not used the glaze for some time you will need to sieve it again. If it is only slightly separated, i.e. if it is a thin mix at the top thickening slightly towards the bottom but still liquid throughout, you can mix it by hand, but be sure to be extremely thorough. Earthenware glazes tend to settle out quite quickly, and you can counteract this by adding a small quantity of bentonite or calcium chloride solution to the glaze. Use up to 2% bentonite mixed into dry glaze materials before adding water, or 0.1% Calcium chloride dissolved in hot water and carefully added to the slop glaze. Too much Calcium chloride will cause the liquid glaze to overflocculate and turn to jelly, so caution should be exercised when adding it. The effect will gradually wear off over time.

Some glazes do not respond well to being stored in slop form, particularly high alkaline recipes such as Raku glazes and those containing large quantities of colemanite or calcium borate. These should always be freshly prepared.
